World Access to Higher Education Network – The Launch!

🎥 New Vlog Alert: Reflections from the Launch of the World Access to Higher Education Network

What an enlightening day I had earlier this week in Oxford 🤩. It was lovely to be invited along to the launch of the World Access to Higher Education Network.

A truly global network 🌎 and the first of its kind.

Profound insights and incredible examples of work from different corners of the globe showcased the efforts being made worldwide to ensure fairer access to higher education.

Something that really struck me were these universal threads of humanity that are shared across the world. No matter the race, religion or nationality.

These are ones of aligned hopes and fundamental principles that join us together when it comes to fairer access in higher education.

These threads are rooted in shared human values:
✨Diversity
✨Equality of opportunity
✨Inclusivity
✨Equity

🌟 Key Takeaways

1️⃣ Threads of Shared Humanity
No matter where we are in the world, we’re united by values of diversity, inclusivity, equity, and opportunity – when it comes to equity in education.

2️⃣ Shared Ambitions, but also shared barriers . . .
As Roberta Malee Bassett ( The World Bank) noted, inequality persists worldwide, and “being smart is not enough.”

The same equity groups – low-income, women, minorities, and people with disabilities – face overlapping struggles globally.

3️⃣ Global Initiatives
Examples from Southeast Asia: tackling unique challenges, with diversity spanning 68 ethnic groups and thousands of islands to Brazil’s 50% quota system for disadvantaged students.

4️⃣ UNESCO’s Report
Emma Harden-Wolfson (prev. Sabzalieva), PhD’s presentation on the Right to Higher Education report was a highlight—watch the vlog for my key takeaways💡

5️⃣ Worldwide Collaboration
The event reinforced that we are all tackling the same issue worldwide and highlighted (what now seems very obvious!) – we should join forces to truly move the needle for underrepresented students worldwide.
